![]() ![]() Less perhaps than any other writer, not of France, but of modern Europe, Flaubert yields admission to the inexact, the abstract, the vaguely inapt expression which is the bane of ordinary methods of composition. ![]() That he was one of the greatest writers who ever lived in France is now commonly admitted, and his greatness principally depends upon the extraordinary vigour and exactitude of his style. ![]() ![]() One of the most severe of academic critics admits that in all his works, and in every page of his works, Flaubert may be considered a model of style. His private letters show that he was not one of those to whom easy and correct language is naturally given he gained his extraordinary perfection with the unceasing sweat of his brow. It cannot be said that his incessant labors were not rewarded. He worked in sullen solitude, sometimes occupying a week in the completion of one page, never satisfied with what he had composed, violently tormenting his brain for the best turn of a phrase, the most absolutely final adjective. He was born in Rouen, Seine-Maritime, in the Haute-Normandie Region of France.įlaubert's curious modes of composition favored and were emphasized by these peculiarities. Gustave Flaubert is counted among the greatest Western novelists. ![]()

Contrary to Marx, the Bolshevik Revolution occurred in a backward country, which complicated matters in regards to cultural transformation. The Heritage of UnderdevelopmentĪccording to Marx, socialism would develop first in industrialized capitalist countries with their vast productive powers and rich cultural heritage that the working class would use to build a new order. A cultural revolution would raise the masses’ cultural level by eradicating mass illiteracy and superstition and change their habits and customs, which would make the working class fit to rule society. Trotsky’s industrialization plan for Russia would increase the social weight of the proletariat. According to Trotsky, a cultural revolution was needed along with industrialization to construct socialism. However, Leon Trotsky, in a vastly different way than Mao, stated that Russia needed a cultural revolution. Part of the excitement of watching “Persepolis’’ was the very personal window it afforded on a rich and highly different culture that Americans are familiar with from headlines but know almost nothing about otherwise. A distinctive gray-black look (taken from the graphic novel) communicated the film’s seriousness without ever limiting its wit or playfulness. “Persepolis’’ was smart and funny and alive with invention, as well as an uncommon ability to blend tragedy and comedy. Ann book, as she is so highly recommended by my romance reader friends. I enjoy a grumpy man-bread, and you all know I love a cinnamon roll hero but this story is not that. It may have just been the rude broody alpha that didn't do it for me, but I wasn't feeling it. As the story developed I found myself uninterested and "waiting for the good parts." Again, this could have very well been mostly due to the narration. I know most romance readers love a bad boy mysterious hero, but I was quite annoyed at all the mystery around Slade and his dog (why did all the professors just let him bring his dog to class, no questions asked?) I wasn't invested in the characters, and found Livy unlikable, a bit annoying, and even needy at times. The female narrator didn't have a distictive male voice, so it was hard to differentiate. I love audiobooks cuz I can multi-task while listening, but if I miss the first 2 seconds of a new chapter, I miss who is talking. When a female reads the whole book, yet there are chapters from a male's POV, I sometimes miss it, and later realize."Wait, this is a male talking?" It was confusing at times, and hard to follow. ![]() Also an important note, I feel the narration was left wanting and therefore affected my enjoyment of the book.
